About the Campaign

Candidate: Matt Bennett

Matt has lived in Dunkirk his whole life. He will be 20 years old come the mid-term elections. He graduated from Northern High in 2016 and is majoring in mathematics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He played soccer, basketball, and baseball before dedicating himself to competitive running. During high school, Matt won ten individual SMAC titles, nine regional titles and four state titles while serving as a co-captain of the Cross Country/Track teams under the guidance of Coach Josh Dawson.

He achieved perfect attendance from 2nd grade through graduation, was inducted into the National Honors Society, and co-founded the Debate Club at Northern. While serving as the President of Northern’s Young Democrats, the club grew from four to over twenty active members. Matt attributes the club’s success to the fantastic help and leadership of his Vice President Maxwell Hakun and associates Matt Phillips, Maddy Twetten, Lauren Cutlip, and Megan Klink. The club assisted in and volunteered for various Calvert County Democratic Central Committee activities during the 2014 and 2016 elections. Matt also chose to participate with and engage in the exchange of ideas and political views with Northern’s Young Republicans.

Matt has worked at Herrington Harbor in Anne Arundel since 2014. He served as a youth leader of the Calvert County Youth Running Club for four years. He is currently a member of UMBC College Democrats and the UMBC Progressives.

I’ve been endorsed by the Metropolitan Washington Council AFL-CIO! My father worked for a union for 35 years. My mother is a member of a teacher’s union. My family knows the importance of unions to the middle class. I believe we are facing a huge imbalance in the relationship between labor and big business that we haven’t seen since the Great Depression. I will do my part to defend and strengthen unions.

I’m proud to be endorsed by Run For Something! This younger generation, with the help of organizations like RFS, is leading the way to create a new vision for how government should treat its citizens.
